The best veggie burger for the grill!

Updated: Sep 29

If you were at the Women's Ride CHALLENGE on September 13th, you may have tasted the best veggie burger in the world! I’m not making this up—that’s what the participants said!

No surprise there: my mom and I tested no fewer than 4 recipes before picking the winner—our very own creation! We took the texture from one, the flavor from another, and so on.

So here it is: the result of our long efforts to create the best veggie burger made for the grill!

Fair warning: we didn’t take any shortcuts with this recipe. But trust me, it’s worth it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 small onion + 1/2 tsp salt + a bit of oil

  • 2 cans of black beans

  • 1/2 cup gluten-free oat flour (or rolled oats finely blended)

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • 3 tbsp store-bought BBQ sauce (Dana or other)

  • 2 tbsp tahini

  • 1 tbsp each of chilli powder, cumin, and smoked paprika (yes, it’s a lot, but it’s delicious!)

  • 1 marinated pepper (we used a mild one, but you can go spicier if you like)

Makes 5–6 large patties (7–8 medium ones).

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. Rinse and drain the two cans of black beans, then pat them as dry as possible with a towel or paper towel. Spread them out evenly on one or two baking sheets.

  3. Bake the beans for 22 minutes at 350°F. This step dries them out and gives the patties the perfect texture. Trust me on this one!

  4. Meanwhile, in a pan, sauté the onion with salt in a small amount of oil. Set aside.

  5. Once the beans are out of the oven and slightly cooled, mash them by hand or in a blender (we ended up using the blender). (There will be some bigger chunks, that's fine)

  6. Add the remaining ingredients to the blender. Adjust the moisture with the BBQ sauce (we found that 3 tbsp was just right).

  7. To form perfectly shaped patties: line a 1/2-cup measuring cup with plastic wrap, fill it, and press firmly. Place onto a plate and gently flatten.

  8. On the BBQ, depending on your grill, you can brush it with a bit of oil using a silicone brush. Either way, the patties hold their shape beautifully.

And there you have it: the best veggie burger in the world.

Save this recipe—you won’t need another one!
